Suvereto-Sassetta
Suvereto
is a municipality of 2.897 inhabitants in the province of Livorno. It belongs to the valley of Cornia, where the important Val-di-Cornia-Suvereto-d.o.c. wines are made, and is part of the City of Wine Association. Its toponym dates back to 973 and derives from the Latin "suber" (cork); Suvereto thus meaning cork woods.
The typically scattered colonial houses remind of the ancient organization of farming and characterize both the settlings along the Cornia river and those who mark the boundaries of Suvereto on the hill side.
Sassetta is a municipality of 548 inhabitants in the province of Livorno. Its toponym dates back to 1238 and derives from the Latin "saxum" (stone); Sassetta thus meaning little stone. It is a little town on the hills of the high maremma, surrounded by chestnut woods and a classic Mediterranean "macchia" (maquis), who benefits from the pure air of a preserved hill landscape. Not far away you will find some ancient medieval towns and villages such as Suvereto, Castagneto C.cci, Campiglia M.ma, Bolgheri, Volterra, San Gimignano, Massa Marittima and Siena.
