Rosignano Marittimo

Rosignano Marittimo is a municipality of 30.558 inhabitants in the province of Livorno. Its name, Rosignano, probably derives from a Roman citizen, Rusinius o Rasinius. In 1862 its toponym was completed with "Marittimo", i.e. of the Maremma (from the Latin "Maritima"). This municipality hosts an important medieval castle, which was often struggled upon because of its strategic position. Its new fortifications were built in 1562, during the reign of Cosimo I de' Medici. |
